Modernization and reconstruction of the Hungarian State Opera – with Rubio Monocoat

Renovation of wood floors and wood coverings with a next-generation product.

Renovation and modernization works of the Opera were completed in March, so now we can see the results of large-scale renovation. One of the main goals of the impressive and enormous reconstruction was to restore the building to its original splendor using modern technological solutions. We are really proud that Rubio Monocoat was able to take part in this amazing architectural, artistic restoration process and contributed to a sustained, modern protection and look with our interior wood oil in a unique colour.

The challenges of the renovation

The Opera was originally designed by Miklós Ybl. He and the most brilliant artists, designers and experts of their ages did an impressive job of every little detail of the House. Although various renovation works have been carried out in the last 135 years, this has only made the reconstruction of the original ideas even more challenging.

One of the most important elements of the interior (in addition to the beautiful decorations on the walls and lighting elements, of course) are the striking wooden coverings and wooden floors - which can also be seen from above due to the design of the auditoriums. For this reason it has become even more important that these wooden surfaces regain their appearance close to the original, while receiving much more durable, resistant wood protection than before.

Surface treatment of Swedish floors, tongue-and-groove wooden floors and inlaid elements

The Swedish floor of the auditorium is made of oak, similar to a wooden parquet, made of wider wooden elements. The color of the traditional floor was perfectly matched for the colours of the room, harmonized with the upholstery, wall painting and decorative elements. The building has traditional wooden slotted floors and inlaid elements, which in addition to their classic atmosphere have a very durable design, so they also placed great emphasis on their renovation. This time the wood surfaces have been treated with oil for easier maintenance in the long run.

Modern technology provides the solution: Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C - interior wood protection

To preserve the natural look and feel of oak, the contractors opted for Rubio Monocoat interior wood oil, which is also available in a unique blend of colours, giving the wooden floor a great opportunity to retain its old splendor while receiving state-of-the-art wood protection. After treatment with wood oil, the wood surfaces have a very high abrasion resistance, do not slip and do not form a glossy film. The oiling gives the floors a deep, intense colour and also a natural look.

In addition to the wooden floor, other wooden cladding in the building was also restored to look like the original, which was a very meticulous and lengthy job. The inlaid tiles made of oak in the lounges and lodge corridors were created by hand carving 136 years ago and they have almost completely lost their original colour due to the synthetic treatments they have suffered in recent years. In this case our uniquely mixed Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C oil was used to reconstruct the colours.

Easy-to-maintain, durable wood protection

In order for the effect of the renovation and reconstruction to remain truly long-lasting, so that the wood surfaces retain their current intense and natural appearance for a long time, they are going to clean with Rubio Monocoat Universal Soap. Furthermore the Universal Maintenance oil will be used for the surface upgrades needed later.

It is a great pleasure for us to be part of a project with such a large-scale and breathtaking result as the renovation of the Hungarian State Opera shortly after the appearance of Rubio Monocoat in Hungary.
